The Olympus DS-2400 digital recorder, by default, records in DS2 format (.ds2), otherwise known as DSS Pro format. Although the DS2 file format is a better format from a technological standpoint, it is much less compatible than the older DSS Classic format (.dss). Many transcription software programs do not support the DS2 file format, which at first glance makes the DS-2400 seem like a less desirable handheld recorder. There are two ways to work around this problem. First, the Olympus DSS Player Standard software, that comes with the DS-2400, allows you to convert DS2 files to DSS files. Second, if you purchase the DS-2400 from PCDictate.com, we will provide you a firmware update that will allow you to configure your Olympus DS-2400 to record in DSS Classic format (.dss) rather than the default DSS Pro format (.ds2).
